General Secretary-Treasurer Tom Keegel has accomplished more at the International Brotherhood of Teamsters than any other General Secretary-Treasurer in the Union’s history.

Keegel has instituted sweeping reforms in every area of the Union’s finances. He has balanced the budget for the first time in more than a decade; hired skilled auditors and accountants; developed programs to extend these reforms to local unions, Joint Councils, Divisions and Conferences; and has undertaken the task of strengthening the Union’s treasury and Strike Fund.

Tom Keegel has been a dedicated, loyal Teamster for nearly 50 years. Over the years, he has witnessed the heights Teamsters can reach when they are strong, proud and unified. As General Secretary-Treasurer, Keegel aims to lift up his Teamster sisters and brothers to even greater heights through his work as their fiscal watchdog and the guardian of their hard-earned dues money.

BACKGROUND

Tom Keegel has held elective office in the Union for more than 25 years. His leadership skills have earned him the respect and support of his Teamster brothers and sisters throughout the Union. Keegel’s skills as the union’s chief financial officer were honed in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where he expanded an area pension fund from $3 million in assets into a $220 million powerhouse for Teamsters retirees. That pension fund now offers a top benefit of $60,000 per year and excellent coverage.

• 1959: Joined Teamsters Local 544 in Minneapolis as a driver for Sterling Cartage Co.

• 1978: Elected Recording Secretary of Local 544

• 1983: Elected Principal Officer and Secretary-Treasurer of Local 544

• 1984: Elected Trustee for Teamsters Joint Council 32

• 1980s and 1990s: Member, Central States Negotiating Committee of the National Master Freight Agreement

• 1998: Elected President of Local 120 following merger of Local 544 and Local 120; elected President of Joint Council 32 after serving in all other Executive Board positions since 1984

• 1999-Present: General Secretary-Treasurer, International Brotherhood of Teamsters
